In the summer of 2017, I drove from the flatlands of Lubbock, Texas to the grand expanse of Wyoming in order to photograph "The Great American Eclipse."

I wanted to position myself in the path of totality - where the moon passes directly between the earth and the sun - and photograph the dramatic turning of daylight into dark:

In the months prior to the Great American Eclipse of 2017, millions of people made plans to travel to a location somewhere in the "path of totality" - where the shadow of the moon would pass directly over the earth, creating a few moments of darkness in the middle of the day.

I wanted to create an image that embodied the spirit of the American West. I needed to be as close to the eclipse as possible, yet far from the millions of tourists along the interstate.

"I needed wide open spaces, and I needed a string of horses."

On the afternoon of August 21, 2017, I found exactly what I needed under a once - in - a lifetime Wyoming moon:
